Uses of Castings
Directions for UsesUse one part of castings with five to six equal parts of peat moss, potting soil or other organic or top soil. Most plants, trees or shrubs require a rich fertile soil. Those types of plants, trees, shrubs and lawns will prosper even better when soil is enriched with worm castings. For best results, add mulch over castings or castings mixed with peat moss mix. For poor soils, add a three to nine-inch layer of compost (hot compost or vermicompost) and mix into a three to five-inch depth of your ground. For all plants, trees, shrubs and lawns, do not disturb the existing root system unless, of course, a tree root is under your house cracking your foundation. Worm castings will not burn your plants or lawn like chemical or other types of fertilizers.
LawnsFor use in new lawns, place about 1/2-inch thick of worm castings and mix with soil prior to applying lawn seed. For existing lawns, spread about 1/2-inch thick of worm castings on the lawn and water fairly heavily.
House or Potted PlantsFor transplanting plants into new pots, mix about one part worm castings with five parts of potting soil. To revitalize existing potted plants, add about a 1/2-inch thick layer of castings on top of the soil in the pot. Do not disturb roots of the plants.
TreesFor planting new trees, mix one part castings with five parts soil or peat moss. Make sure your mixture covers the complete area a minimum of one foot around the tree roots, including the area under the roots; then plant your trees per instructions you received. For existing trees, add 1/2-inch thick layer of castings on top of the ground covering the area from trunk to just past the root area.
Shrubs and RosesFor planting new shrubs or roses, mix one part castings with five parts of soil and/or peat moss. Make sure your mixture covers the complete area a minimum of six inches to one foot around the shrub roots, including area under the roots. For existing shrubs or roses, add a 1/2-inch layer of castings on top of the ground all the way around the shrub or rose bush root area.
BulbsFor planting new bulbs, prepare the soil by mixing one part castings with five parts of soil and/or peat moss. Mix about six inches around the bulb.
Perennials and VegetablesFor planting new plants, mix one part castings with five parts of soil and/or peat moss. Make sure your mixture covers the complete area a minimum of three to six inches around plants or vegetables. For existing garden, spread about 1/2-inch thick layer of castings around each plant and water fairly heavily.
